This project
involves finding out what help there is in your area for people who have
problems with drug use.
There are different types of help for people who have drug problems. What
is available varies in different areas. Your area might have:
 |
A Drug
Advice and Counselling Service which gives information and advice
to drug users. |
 |
Young
people's advice service which helps young people with any problem,
including drugs. |
 |
Hospital
drug services for people who are dependent on drugs like heroin or
alcohol. |
 |
Special
centres where people can go and stay while they come off drugs. |
 |
Self-help
groups for drug users or the parents or families of drug users. |
To find out what is available in your area you could:
- look under
the word DRUGS in your local phone book or yellow pages
- ask at
a Citizen's Advice Bureau or other information service like the public
library
- ask at
your school or college
- ring the
FRANK drug helpline on 0800 77 66 00.
- Search
DrugScope's treatment services directory - Helpfinder
Once you
have some idea of what exists find out more about exactly what is on offer.
You could ring agencies up and obtain their information leaflet. You could
also ask them questions over the phone or visit and interview the staff.
You might ask them:
- Exactly
what they offer and to whom.
- When they
are open or available.
- Whether
anyone can contact them direct or whether people have to go through
a doctor or other professional.
- Whether
there is an appointment system or you can just pop in.
- Whether
there is a waiting list and if so how long.
- Whether
there is an age limit (some services don't see people aged under 16).
- What rules
they have about confidential information.
- How they
would like to see their service improved.
- Anything
else you think is important.
Note down the answers you get. Write a report about what services exist
locally, what they offer and how good you think they are.
If your fellow students do not know about local help services you could
assist in getting relevant information to them. You might arrange for
leaflets to be available to them or for posters to be put up. You might
even produce your own leaflet making students aware of local services.
